U.S.A.
Alexandria was established in 1749 and quickly grew as a political, social and trade center. Situated across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, Alexandria is a short distance from many national monuments and areas of interest. Boat tours from the city are an appealing way to become acquainted with area attractions, including Alexandria's historic waterfront and the sights in Washington. The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a popular destination that houses the Washington family Bible and other family possessions. Standing 333 feet in height, it is modeled after an ancient lighthouse in Alexandria, Egypt. In the Old Alexandria district, 18th and 19th-century homes border cobblestone streets. Shopping on Cameron Street is not to be missed.
